How will my application be assessed?

Below you will see process by which an application is assessed, and a decision is made.

Stage 1: Initial assessment (12 weeks)

1. Applicant self-assesses against NSF eligibility checklist and reads the pre-application guidance on the NSF website.

Not eligible: Applicant does not proceed with application.

Eligible: Proceed to step 2.

2. Applicant completes online application form and uploads all mandatory documentation.

3. NSF Development Manager conducts initial assessment based on application form and mandatory documentation.

Application summary is then sent to NSF Awards Panel for decision.

Stage 2: Project Development (12 weeks)

4. NSF Awards Panel offer 'In-Principle Support' or 'Reject' application.

Rejected by Awards Panel: Applicant informed of decision.

Supported by Awards Panel: 'In-Principle Support' offered, proceed to step 5.

5. NSF works with applicant to produce a detailed 'Action Plan'.

6. Action Plan completed by the applicant?

No: 'In-Principle Support' withdrawn. Applicant informed of decision.

Yes: Proceed to step 7.

7. NSF Development Manager undertakes a full assessment based on Action Plan and supporting documentation provided by applicant.

Application summary is then sent to NSF Awards Panel for decision.

Project Delivery; Monitoring and Evaluation

8. NSF Awards Panel decision.

Rejected: Applicant informed of decision.

Supported by Awards Panel: Full Award offered, proceed to step 9.

9. Award 'accepted' by applicant.

10. Project and payments begin; project monitored throughout its lifespan.
